This beef taco seasoning mimics the taste of the packaged variety you can find at the store, but without the fillers and MSG you can sometimes find in those. A batch of this can be used in tacos, burritos, burrito bowls, nachos or enchiladas, and along with some rice and beans, can usually satisfy everyone's tastes (everything for one, rice and beans for another, beef and rice for a third and wrapped up in a warmed tortilla for the last).
I like to quadruple (or more) the recipe and keep it in a jar so it's ready at a moments notice, which makes this even easier than it already is on a busy weeknight. Multiplying the recipe is also a great activity for older kids learning fractions (what's 4 times a 1/2 tsp?). Have them gather all the spices and try to figure it out while you sit back and read your magazine :)
I N G R E D I E N T S :
SPICE MIXTURE:
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
2 tbsp chilli powder
1 tsp cumin
1 tsp coriander
1/2 tsp oregano
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/2 tsp salt
BEEF:
1 lb ground beef
1/2 c. canned tomato sauce (Not jarred pasta sauce. Most 14 oz cans have about 1 cup of sauce, measure out the extra half cup and store it in the freezer for the next time you make this recipe)
1/2 c. chicken broth
2 tsp cider vinegar
1 tsp brown sugar
1 tbsp vegetable oil
I N S T R U C T I O N S :
Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium high heat. Add spice mixture and toast spices for about 30 seconds until fragrant (if you've multiplied your spices into a jar, you'll need about 3 tbsp of spice mixture). Add beef and cook until browned all the way through. Add tomato sauce, broth, brown sugar and cider vinegar and bring to a simmer. Let simmer for 10-12 minutes until liquid has reduced slighty, and serve.
